Faulbärs blog post about his diet made me think about how I have lost so much weight – without a planed diet.
When I finished school in june 2006 I was over 90kg. When I started studying at University one year later I had lost 15kg. Now I am about 70kg.
The loss of ~1/4 of my weight began with a dramatic change in daily habits. Before I spend my day mostly in a sitting position, sport (e.g. at school) was a horror. Which became even more of an issue when I started driving, my movement was limited to getting to my car and getting from my car to the next building.
After I finished school I went backpacking, and things changed rapidly. I was relying on public transportation and my feet. Living in Hostels meant I had to cook for myself. I ate little meat, (because that is expensive and goes bad quickly). I was mostly living on rice with vegetables. Rice with a canned peas and some salt ist the cheapest filling meal you can probably cook. If I bought meat I always tried to make two meals out of it. So that I sometimes ate pretty small amounts.
I had lost most of the weight during the time in Australia, thus it is not to blame on the sicknesses I had in Asia. However, the food hygene there and the Malaria medication I took over two month caused trouble with my digestion, making me more conscious eater. I took a while after returning home before I really could eat normal rich western food again.
After moving to Denmark I started to gain weight again. So I took up sport, first running and then volleyball. I got in a good shape within a few month. By now I have given away most of big clothes. But I still have smart clothes which are pretty baggy now. Since I don’t wear them often I feel bad if I would throw them out, so I hope to find some cheap tailor to solve that issue.

The left picture shows me during my first weeks in Australia, the right one this summer in Makedonia.
I am happy with my shape now. I shouldn’t loose anymore weight, since it’s alreaddy difficult to find clothes. (Size S male clothing is not so common) The fear of becoming fat again is always with me, so that I feal guilty when eating sweets or rich meals.
So my recipe: Use own legs for getting around, eat little sugar and fat, start with sport, combine it with something fun (e.g. Backpacking)
I didn’t need a magic medicine, advice from magazines and I had never set a foot into a gym until I started to play volleyball in one here in Amsterdam
